Antihydrogen annihilation reconstruction with the ALPHA silicon detector

چکیده
The ALPHA experiment has succeeded in trapping antihydrogen, a major milestone on the road to spectroscopic comparisons of antihydrogen with hydrogen. An annihilation vertex detector, which determines the time and position of antiproton annihilations, has been central to this achievement. This detector, an array of double-sided silicon microstrip detector modules arranged in three concentric cylindrical tiers, is sensitive to the passage of charged particles resulting from antiproton annihilation. This article describes the method used to reconstruct the annihilation location and to distinguish the annihilation signal from the cosmic ray background. Recent experimental results using this detector are

Silicon vertex detector upgrade in the ALPHA experiment
The Silicon Vertex Detector (SVD) is the main diagnostic tool in the ALPHA-experiment. It provides precise spatial and timing information of antiproton (antihydrogen) annihilation events (vertices), and most importantly, the SVD is capable of directly identifying and analysing single annihilation events, thereby forming the basis of ALPHA's analysis. This paper describes the ALPHA SVD and its u...
متن کاملDetecting Antihydrogen: The Challenges and the Applications
ATHENA’s first detection of cold antihydrogen atoms relied on their annihilation signatures in a sophisticated particle detector. We will review the features of the ATHENA detector and its applications in trap physics. The detector for a new experiment ALPHA will have considerable challenges due to increased material thickness in the trap apparatus as well as field non-uniformity. Our studies i...
متن کاملParticle Physics Aspects of Antihydrogen Studies with ALPHA at CERN
We discuss aspects of antihydrogen studies, that relate to particle physics ideas and techniques, within the context of the ALPHA experiment at CERN’s Antiproton Decelerator facility. We review the fundamental physics motivations for antihydrogen studies, and their potential physics reach. We argue that initial spectroscopy measurements, once antihydrogen is trapped, could provide competitive t...
متن کاملEfficient Antihydrogen Detection in Antimatter Physics by Deep Learning
Antihydrogen is at the forefront of antimatter research at the CERN Antiproton Decelerator. Experiments aiming to test the fundamental CPT symmetry and antigravity effects require the efficient detection of antihydrogen annihilation events, which is performed using highly granular tracking detectors installed around an antimatter trap. Improving the efficiency of the antihydrogen annihilation d...
متن کاملEfficiency determination for the ATRAP detector system
The ATRAP experiment at the CERN Antiproton decelerator (AD) aiming for a precise CPT test by studying the antihydrogen atom includes a detection system for the antiproton annihilation products. Antihydrogen production studies require the knowledge of the produced antihydrogen atoms as well as absolute antiproton losses during the development. In 2008 the ATRAP experiment has been modified by a...
